This view was taken from a Japanese aircraft and shows the early stages of the attack. Ford Island is in the foreground, and in the distance are the Navy Yard and the Submarine Base. A torpedo has just hit West Virginia on the far side of Ford Island. The other outboard battleship is Oklahoma, which has already been torpedoed and is listing to port. On the near side of Ford Island, to the left, are light cruisers Detroit and Raleigh, training ship Utah and seaplane tender Tangier. Raleigh and Utah have been torpedoed, and Utah is listing sharply to port. Two Japanese torpedo planes can be seen banking away after launching their weapons. (Naval History and Heritage Command)
